Tools & Technology

From the beginning, we at Larson & McGowin have sought out and secured the latest technology to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of land management professionals. At times our management team partners with associates outside the firm to develop the optimal solution for our clients. In other cases simple training and the sharing of experience can help in a transfer of technology.

Larson & McGowin tools and technology resources include:

Datarecorders and associated software

We have experience in buying and developing software for datarecorders, training field technicians in their proper use, and developing procedural guidelines to optimize the effectiveness of this time-saving tool. We currently use the TDS Ranger from Tripod Data Systems which is available through our subsidiary, Silvics Solutions.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

We use the new GeoExplorer III developed by Trimble to collect map data in the field to support our clients’ GIS systems. A powerful new tool, GPS can improve acreage estimates and mapping accuracy that yield more precise estimates of timber, planting acreage and site preparation costs.

Timber Estimate Software (ForestPro Compiler)

We developed our first in-house cruise computation program called CruzPro in 1991 and have since advanced our technology into a flexible Windows-based relational database. The design and programming were completed in-house and the system has been operational since 1999. It is maintained by our subsidiary, Silvics Solutions.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

We have extensive experience in building, maintaining and auditing GIS systems. Utilizing a variety of inputs including aerial photography, digital orthoquads, and satellite imagery, we work with both in-house specialists and associated experts across the industry to make this powerful tool more efficient.

Forest Enterprise Data Management System (ForestPro Manager)

Over the years we have utilized a variety of spreadsheets and databases to track everything from budgets to land management activities. In January 2000 we launched our flagship database management tool called ForestPro that makes the land management professional a more efficient and thorough administrator. Maintained now by our subsidiary, Silvics Solutions, ForestPro Manager keeps important historical records in a stand diary and helps track inventory growth and removals. Key stumpage price, budget, accounting and related information is conveniently filed and accessible to the professional. Linkage to GIS systems makes ForestPro a powerful yet flexible administrative tool.

Remote Sensing

In the early 2000s we began using satellite imagery and Leica Imagine to do automatic stand delineation and classification for regional timber supply studies and timber inventory analysis. We continue to monitor and research the practical application of this emerging technology.
